questions worth asking before you trust an app with your food

for anyone with a food allergy who wants to know exactly what MoguMogu does, and what it doesnt.

About the verdicts

How does MoguMogu decide safe vs not safe?

it checks the ingredient list against the profile you set. if something you avoid is on the label you get a not safe. if nothing you avoid shows up you get a safe for what the label says. it only knows what the label or the shop told it. it doesnt taste the food or watch the kitchen.

What if the label is unclear or missing?

then it says so. no label means no verdict. if the wording is vague it tells you it cant be sure instead of guessing. a cant verify is not a safe. treat it as a question to ask, not an answer.

Can I trust the allergen info at restaurants that publish through MoguMogu?

it depends on the shop. the info comes from the shop owner, not from us. a good shop marks not sure where they really arent sure, and that honesty is the whole point. still confirm with the person serving you before you eat.

What happens if I have a rare or non-standard allergy?

you can add your own items beyond japans standard list. if you add something the label doesnt name, the app cant find it, so it tells you it cant verify rather than clearing it. for anything unusual, ask staff directly.

Can I trust the OCR when scanning Japanese labels?

mostly it reads well, but not always. small print, curved packaging, and faded ink trip it up. always glance at the label yourself after a scan. if the scan looks wrong it probably is. we dont claim a perfect read.

About safety

Should I still ask staff before eating?

yes. always. this is the one that matters most. the app is a first pass, not the final word. the person cooking knows things no label shows.

What if there's an ingredient the app doesn't recognize?

it flags it instead of ignoring it. an unknown ingredient becomes a cant verify, never a quiet safe. when you see that, ask before you eat.

What if the recipe changed since the shop last updated?

then the app is behind, and it cant know that. data is only as fresh as the last update the shop made. this is another reason to confirm out loud, especially for specials and seasonal dishes.

Does MoguMogu handle cross-contact?

no, not on its own. it reads what is in a product or a dish, not what happened next to it on the counter or in the fryer. cross contact lives in the kitchen, so that question goes to staff every time.

About your data

What does MoguMogu know about me?

your dietary profile, and thats mostly it. it lives on your phone. we built it to check food, not to build a picture of you.

Is my dietary profile shared with restaurants?

no. it stays on your device. a shop never sees your allergies or what you scanned. the check runs on your phone, and the result is yours alone.

Can I delete my data?

yes. you clear your profile or remove the app and its gone. since it sits on your device, theres no cloud copy to chase.

What if MoguMogu shuts down?

your data isnt trapped somewhere we hold. it has always been on your phone. if the app went away tomorrow, theres nothing of yours locked in a server to get back.

Practical

Does it work offline?

the check itself runs on your phone, so the core of it works without a signal. some things like opening a shops latest menu need a connection. so it depends on what youre doing.

Does it work in English?

yes. the app runs in english and japanese. the labels it reads are japanese, and it helps you make sense of them in english.

Is it free?

yes, this year. no ads, no selling your data. year one is on the house while the shop network gets going.

Which cities have shops?

sapporo to start, with more coming. shop discovery is just launching, so the map is small today and growing. the label scanning works anywhere in japan.

I found a wrong allergen. How do I report it?

tell us. you can report it in the app, or email support@sapporosoft.com. flag it as soon as you can, because a wrong entry could affect someone else too.
